Scrapbooking - A hobby turned into a multi billion dollar business
Scrapbooking is a hobby enjoyed by many women and a few men and has become a major business in the United States and other countries. My role is mostly as an observer but I contribute ideas and product designs for my spouse. She spends many hours in her work area and she gets great enjoyment for her creations. The hobby is panned by some as a housewife's idle pastime but it is much more than that. It requires intuition and abilities to select photos and embellishments and papers and textures to execute a successful page design. The pages and resulting albums can be as simple or as complex as you want, there are no hard and fast rules and the sky is the limit. Mixed mediums are common and you can find items of all types on scrapbook pages. It is amazing where the scrapbookers imaginations take them. Photos are most common but that is just the very beginning as you will also find all kinds of memorabilia on the pages of modern albums. I have seen keys, coins, bottle caps, tickets, ribbons and myriad other items used to decorate the scrapbook pages and they are used to tell the story or invoke the emotions the page represents. The scrapbooks can have many different techniques in them as well. Although many will think that just photos are what make a scrapbook. With a little investigation you will find rubberstamping, embossing, die cutting and various means of coloring or embellishing are used quite often.
